A "Maine law" passed inside 1851 in Maine was one of the number 1 statutory implementations of the underdeveloped temperance movement in the United States. A passage of a law prohibiting the low of completely alcoholic beverages, except for "medicinal, mechanical or manufacturing purposes," quickly spread elsewhere, & by 1855 twelve states experienced joined Maine inside aggregate prohibition. These were "dry" states; states forgoing prohibition laws were "wet."
A work was unpopular using numbers of working class population & immigrants. Opposition to the law turned violent inside Portland, Maine on June 2, 1855 during an incident known as a Maine law riot.
